CSM Bernard H. Smith
CSM Bernard Hayes Smith, U.S. Army Ret., 85, of Overlook Road, entered into rest on Monday, November 6, 2006 at D.D. Eisenhower Medical Center, Ft. Gordon, Ga.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, November 9 at New Work Baptist Church with Rev. Russell Davis officiating. Interment followed at Double Branches Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
CSM Smith was Born in Halls, Tennessee, and had lived the last 34 years in Lincolnton. He retired from the US Army after serving 23 years. Also while in the US Navy for four years he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was also a school bus driver for the Lincoln County School System and a charter and faithful member of New Work Baptist Church where he served on the Guidance Counsel. He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra "Sandy" Harding.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jimmie Ellis Smith; three sons, James Smith and wife, Melanie of Fayetteville, Ga., Bernard "Bernie" Smith, Jr. and wife, Cindy of San Antonio, Tx., and Gary Smith and wife, Lynn of Martinez, Ga.; one daughter, Cathy S. Tankersley and husband, Wayne of Madison, Ga.; a sister, Hazel Julian of McMinnville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Brad Tankersley, Jenny Tankersley, Sue Ellen Tankersley, Kelly Jarosz, J.B. Smith, Ben Harding, Holly Blanton, and Maddie Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Jillian Jarosz, Isabella Jarosz, Broc Jarosz and Wayne Blanton.
Memorials may be made to the building fund for New Work Baptist Church, 4900 Double Branches Rd., Lincolnton, Ga. 30817.
Beggs Funeral Home, Lincolnton, was in charge of arrangements.
