Recovering from surgery

Nolan Arrowood, who suffers from polycystic kidney disease, has long been in need of a kidney transplant, but no one in his family had a kidney that was a match. His daughter, Tonya Burt, however, was a match for another individual on the transplant registry. As a result, Arrowood and Burt participated in a "paired kidney transplant" Tuesday, May 23, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. In essence, three donors and three recipients were operated on simultaneously, with each donor receiving a kidney that was a perfect match. As of press time, Burt is recovering at home, and Arrowood is in ICU at Johns Hopkins.
