Monday marked another day in the long history of remembering our nation's fallen heroes. In a world where so many so-called holidays are nothing but blatant commercialism Memorial Day is definitely a keeper.

I hope we never tire of honoring those who have given their lives in pursuit of the freedoms you and I now enjoy. Unfortunately, if the extreme left continues to lambaste all we hold dear in the name of political correctness there may very well come a time when we are forbidden to celebrate freedom at all.

These leftists have made no secret of the fact they think our military efforts are "arrogant and dangerous" and have actually compared the actions of our military to the acts of terrorists!

These people claim to love America and insist they support our military troops yet they say our military is a threat to world peace. These same leftists call our Viet Nam veterans "baby-killers" and think we are evil for defending our country or ourselves

They excuse terrorism by blaming poverty and actually think we can abolish terrorist acts by "understanding" the perpetuators of such hideous crimes against our nation.

They seek to ban guns from our lawabiding citizens and have labeled flag flying, the American family, Boy Scouts, our Founding Fathers, churches, and our Judeo-Christian values "intolerant and outdated."

It's enough to make any God-fearing American sick to his stomach.

Visiting my father's grave the other day I scanned the Lincolnton Cemetery and was once again reduced to tears at the sight of all the tiny American flags planted next to our county's fallen heroes.

I'm just glad these brave men and women don't have to witness what is happening in our country today. These valiant Americans who sacrificed their time, their families, and some their very lives for our freedom. Ironically, the same freedoms these anti-American leftists still enjoy.

I only hope that those of us who can will awake from our political apathy and speak up for what is right in our society. It isn't easy to stand up for good when so many are in a war against it but if we fail to be counted we risk losing more than we realize.

As it has been said so many times, freedom is not free. Man is born a sinner and his bent is to sinning. He is selfish, egotistical, and power hungry. It is because of that awareness our country was founded on Christian principles by men who knew their own hearts and knew that if we are to survive as a nation we must fight evil at every turn, even at the risk of our own lives.

Remember today those men and women, some who walk beside you every day and many who lie in cemeteries across the nation; those brave comrades who blazed the trail of freedom for us all.

Remember them by continuing the quest for liberty, regardless of the cost; regardless of what others might say or do to us, as individuals or as a country. And dear hearts, you will face opposition at every turn. Don't be deterred, however. We have no time to waste.

Wasn't it Edmund Burke, famous English political statesman, who said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing?" If that is true, and I believe it is, it is high time we practice what we preach and go on about the business of securing our nation's precious freedoms.

Need some encouragement? Try visiting the cemeteries in Lincoln County and take note of all the tiny flags blowing in the breeze. If that doesn't motivate you, nothing will.
