Community Calendar

A 4-Man Scramble Golf Tournament will be held Sat., May 13 at Rocky Branch Golf Course. The cost is $150 per team and the proceeds will benefit the Lincoln County Food Pantry and Ministerial Association.

Golf tournament

The original Clothes Closet, located on Firetower Rd., has reopened, now as T.I.A. Community Helping Hand. All proceeds will go toward the Lincoln County Food Pantry and emergency needs of the community, 50/50.

All donations are welcome, we will pick up. Your donations are appreciated. Hours of operation are: Thurs., 9 a.m. 3 p.m.; Sat., 9 a.m. 12 p.m. For more information, please call 706-359-7838 or 706-359-7345.

For the month of April, all items are .50 each except for coats, boots and furniture.

TIA Helping Hand

The Lincoln County Board of Tax Assessors regular meetings for 2006 will be: Jan. 17; Feb. 21; March 21; April 18; May 16; June 20; July 18; Aug. 15; Sept. 19; Oct. 17; Nov. 21; and Dec. 19.

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare.

Volunteers who are interested in being a part of the outdoor drama on the life of Elijah Clark to be performed at Elijah Clark State Park on July 8, 2006, are encouraged to attend a meeting to be held at 3 p.m., Sun., May 7, at the Dova Partridge Meeting Room of the Lincoln County Library.

New Tabernacle Baptist Church will observe its church anniversary on Sun., May 21 at 10 a.m. Rev. George Edwards and Thankful Baptist Church of Lincolnton, will be the special guests. Everyone is invited. Rev. Matthew Harden is pastor.

The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association (LWREA) will meet at 1810 Country Inn & Winery in Thomson, Ga. on Thurs., May 11 at 11 a.m. All members, retired educators and anyone planning to retire from the field of education, are asked to be present. Membership shall be granted, upon payment of dues, to any person who has retired or plans to retire from the field of education. Coleman Kennedy is president.

LWREA to meet

The Lincoln County Tag Office will close at 3 p.m. on Mon., May 15 and will be closed all day Tues., May 16, due to mandatory school. They apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

There are still openings for the gourd painting classes to be held on May 22 at the MACK in McCormick, S.C. The chicken gourd class will be held from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. and is filling up fast. The leather dyed gourd bowl with pine needle rim will be from 2 -5 p.m. Both items can be seen in the gift shop. Cost is $23 per class. Please call 864-852-3216 to sign up. All supplies included.

Painting classes

The Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Little Mr. & Miss Pageant on Sat., June 3, 2006, 7 p.m. in the Lincoln County High School Auditorium. Applicants must be between the ages of 4-6, but not in the first grade and must be a full time resident of Lincoln County.

Entry fee is $30 at the time application is submitted. Deadline to enter is Mon., May 15, at 5 p.m. Applications can be picked up at the chamber office. For more information, please call 706-359-7970.

Pageant slated for June 3

The 133rd anniversary of Newberry Missionary Baptist Church will be held Sun., May 21 at 2 p.m. Rev. William Bussey, pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, will be the guest minister. Rev. Willie J. White is pastor.

Church anniversary The post office can food drive for the Lincoln County Food Pantry will be held Sat., May 13. Please place your canned goods in a bag and leave beside your mailbox. Your mail carrier will pick them up while doing the route.

Everyone is encouraged to participate. All donations will benefit our community.

The Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services will have CPR/ First Aid class on May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the office of emergency services. You must pre-register by May 19 with a $10 fee. The cost of the class is $35.00.

The American Cancer Society now offers its Road to Recovery program to cancer patients in Lincoln County who need transportation to and from their treatments, free of charge. Drivers are trained society volunteers who pick up patients at their homes, take them to their treatment and drive them back home.

High school seniors may apply for an honorarium sponsored by the Lincoln Wilkes Retired Educators Association (LWREA).

The student must plan to attend a college or a vocational school for the academic year 2006-2007 and write a 250-500 word essay on the topic The Importance of Furthering My Education.

Please provide a cover page with your name, date, name of high school and the name of the college or vocational school you plan to attend.

The deadline for the essay to be submitted to your high school counselor is Wed., May 10. Contact 706359-4592 with questions.

The American Legion Post 194 will have their election of officers May 16. Executive board will meet at 7 p.m. followed by the general meeting at 7:30 p.m. All members are asked to please attend.

The Broad River Watershed Association will host a canoe float on Sat., May 20 to view the rare shoal lily along the lower section of the Broad River between Hwy. 17 and Hwy. 79 at the mouth of Clark Hill Lake. Everyone will meet at the Broad River WMA camp ground on Hwy. 79 at 9:30 a.m., (there is a $2 parking fee). Cost is $5 per person for non-members or $10 per family, plus any canoe rental. Girl Scouts, Central Savannah River Council will once again host overnight and day camp opportunities for girls ages 5-17 at Camp Tanglewood in Columbia County. Week-long and mini programs will feature games, swimming, horseback riding, nature hikes, camp songs, arts & crafts, plus a variety of specialized programs including: equestrian programs, canoeing, adventure camps, swimming and archery.
