At a recent Summer Safety = Fun in the Sun workshop for Pre-K and Lincoln County Elementary School parents, safety was the key theme. Mr. Jay Weidman, Corps of Engineers, reminded everyone about the importance of water safety. He demonstrated some tips for retrieving little ones from the water while swimming or boating.

"Reach, Throw and Go Get Help" is the progression to teach in helping a drowning person. First, use something to reach with like a fishing pole, branch or towel. If you cannot help with reach, then throw a floating object, like a cooler or float, to the person. The last resort is go get help. Do not jump in the water to rescue. You could drown!

Mr. Nate Moorman, Environmental Health specialist, talked about the safety of car seats/boosters while using a seat belt that is designed for adult use. The seats must be installed correctly in a vehicle in order for them to provide safety for children. Also, children must be properly restrained into the seats. He told the parents participating in the session, that if ten parents were pulled over, eight would have their child unsafely seated in a seat. It is important to know how to use the seats correctly. Booster seats are just as important as infant seats in helping children avoid injury in a wreck. Mr. Moorman is with the Richmond County Health Department and offers a weekly session to parents concerning car seats.

Parents who participated in this walk-about, talk-about session took home car booster seats, bike safety helments, play footballs, small frisbees, and lots of important information to help make their children's summer safe.
