Jailor charged with providing phone to inmate

Matthew Belangia, 26, of Lincolnton, a jailer at the Lincoln County Law Enforcement Center, was arrested and charged with one count each of making a false statement and bringing contraband into the jail.

The investigation into the matter was conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

According to Gary Nicholson, special agent in charge of the Thomson Office of the GBI, the investigation revealed that Belangia was responsible for bringing a cell phone into the jail and giving it to an inmate.

The jailer has since been terminated from his position at the law enforcement center.
