GFC now taking tree seedling orders for planting season

The Georgia Forestry Commission is now taking tree seedling orders for the 2005-2006 planting season. Buyers who would like the widest selection of oaks, hardwoods, pines, shrubs, perennials and other tree varieties are urged to place orders soon, before the most popular species are sold out.

“This is the best time to reserve seedlings in your name,” said Russ Pohl, GFC Chief of Reforestation. “When the early fall rush begins in September, some species sell out in a matter of days.” Species available for sale this year include red maple, redbud, wax myrtle, and several varieties of oak and pine. To coincide with optimal planting seasons, pine seedlings are delivered to county GFC offices from December through February, followed by hardwood seedlings in January and February. Seedlings can be reserved in packs of ten or more, making it an attractive option for residential homeowners as well as landowners with large tracts.

“More and more people recognize that trees are a big help to our environment,” said Pohl. “They help clean the air and provide cooling shade. Plus, they protect water quality by decreasing storm runoff, flooding and erosion.”

Interested buyers may call their local GFC office for information on planting and recommended tree species. A list of available seedlings and prices can be found on the Georgia Forestry Commission website at – H Y P E R L I N K “ h t t p : / / w w w . g a t r e e s . o r g ” — www.gatrees.org or by calling 1800-GA-TREES
