Harris, O’Neill crowned queen and princess during homecoming festivities Friday night
Viola Harris (r) was crowned Homecoming Queen and Kellen O’Neill, Homecoming Princess, during homecoming festivities held at Buddy Bufford Field Friday, October 28. In honor of homecoming, the Red Devils beat GMC 41-6. Viola Harris was crowned LCHS Homecoming Queen when the Red Devils met GMC at Buddy Bufford Field Friday, October 28.
She is the daughter of Janice Leverett and Angelo Harris.
Kellen O’Neill, who is the daughter of Dana and Alex O’Neill, was crowned Homecoming Princess.
The two young ladies were crowned by Monica Talbert, last year’s Homecoming Princess. The queen’s crown was a gift from Tena’s Jewelry & Gift Shop in Washington.

Junior Class Representatives: Megan Saggus, daughter of Al and Melody Saggus, and Franquell Sherman, daughter of Hiawatha and Franklin Sherman.
Sophomore Class Representatives: Marlena Mason, daughter of Mary and Marcus Mason, and Megan Saggus, daughter of Melody and Al Saggus.
Freshman Class Representatives: Barbara Hill, daughter of Faith and Mark Hill, and Allie Clark, daughter of Clayton Clark and the late Angelia Clark.
Prior to the game, senior band members and senior cheerleaders, football players, and softball players took part in the annual Senior Recognition Ceremony. At this time, certificates were presented to the seniors by Jasper Dukes, band director; Heather Yarbrough and Marcella Goldman, cheerleading coaches; Larry Campbell, athletic director and head football coach; and Jeff McKinney, softball coach.
The seniors honored in this fashion were:
Band Members: Alicia Jones, daughter of Cheryl King and Johnny Jones; Sabrina Jones, daughter of Lorie Jones and Racy Freeman; and Cheron Ware, son of Helen Cavitt.
Cheerleaders: Cheryl Gracey, daughter of Janet and Darrel Gracey; Kelli McWhorter, daughter of Denise and Price McWhorter; Kellen O’Neill, daughter of Dana and Alex O’Neill; Jessica Rickerson, daughter of Valorie Driggers and Raymond Rickerson; and Cassie Smith, daughter of Barbara and Leroy Smith.
Football Players: Daniel Biles, son of Jan and Danny Biles; Ryan King, son of Holly and Gerald Lawson; Shawntavius Jennings, son of Carol McCord; DeRon Lee, son of Damonica Lee and Calvin Smith; Chase McGill, son of Nancy and Joey McGill; Trey Morris, son of Sherry and Hal Morris; Jonathan Norman, son of Janet and John Wynn; and Alterrique Smith, son of Emma and Robert Smith.
Softball Players: Alicia Beard, daughter of Dianne and Bobby Beard.
Concerning other homecoming festivities, the overall “Spirit Week” winner was also announced at halftime. The winner was selected on the basis of class participation in “Dress Days” and the “Banner Contest,” activities designed to help get students into the spirit of homecoming.
This year’s overall Spirit Week winner was the Senior Class.
A breakdown of the Dress Days and Banner Contest winners is as follows:
Dress Days — Monday, “College/ Pro Sports Spirit Day,” the Senior Class; Tuesday, “Tacky Day,” the Sophomore Class; Wednesday, “Flashback Day,” the Sophomore Class; Thursday, “Class Color Day,” the Senior Class; and Friday, “Red Devil Spirit Day,” the Senior Class.
Banner Contest — First Place, the Senior Class, and Second Place, the Sophomore Class.
Another highlight of Homecoming was the “Red Devil Darlin’” Pageant which took place Thursday night in the school auditorium. The event featured some of the loveliest senior athletes in the CSRA, all dressed up in their pageant finery.
“Erica Turner” (Cheron Ware), daughter of Ike and Tina Turner, captured the title of Red Devil Darlin’ 2005. The first runner-up was “MaryKate Bailey” (Charles Bailey), daughter of David and Jacnette Bailey, and the second runner-up “Janay Nicole Wynn” (Jonathan Norman), daughter of Janet Jackson and Prince.
To top off the week, a Homecoming Dance was held in the school cafeteria. During the course of the evening, Shawntavius Jennings was crowned Homecoming King and Jonathan Norman, Homecoming Prince.
Spirit Week and the Homecoming Court were both sponsored by the LCHS Student Council.
In her comments, Dana Hill Brennan, student council advisor, expressed her appreciation to all those who participated in the various homecoming activities and helped make the week a success. She extended a special thank-you to Tena’s Jewelry & Gift Shop, Jason Crook, Jericho Florist, Goldman & Wengrow, the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, Bell’s Food Market, Koehler Galleries, and Classic Cuts for their support.
