2005-09-08 / People

The descendants of Daniel Lumpkin Walker (1834-1879) and Margaret Elizabeth Stephenson Walker met at Fishing Creek Baptist Church on Sunday August 21, 2005 for their 85th annual Walker Family Reunion with about one hundred persons attending.

The cousins began arriving shortly after noon and filled the ample serving tables with a wonderful assortment of home-cooked food. Most of the family has a highly developed sweet tooth and the variety of delicious deserts was thoroughly enjoyed.

Greeting old friends, meeting new cousins and sharing family news filled most of the time before and after lunch. Various family documents, old photos and lineage charts were displayed and enjoyed throughout the day. The atmosphere was festive with yellow cloths covering the fellowship hall tables which were centered with cobalt blue bottles tied with multicolored ribbons and holding miniature sunflowers and lantana in colors of pink and gold. The registration table held a large, deep-blue stoneware vase filled with zinnias, lantana and miniature sunflowers.

After a warm welcome by Roger Walker, Phillip Bunch returned thanks. Following lunch Linda W. Anthony gave a short talk on the ‘Walker’ surname and special recognitions were given. Hilda N. Walker of Lincolnton was recognized as the oldest family member attending. Hilda was the wife of the late Arlin F. Walker, one of 61 grandchildren of Lumpkin and Margaret Walker. Hilda who will be 89 on September 20th is the last remaining person from that generation. The youngest was ggggrandson, 3 ½ month old, Alexander Cade Allen of Statesboro, winning over 5 ½ month old ggg-grandson, Wilkes Duncan Walker of Washington. Kathleen Schultz of Naples, Florida had the distinction of traveling the farthest. A spokesman from each family unit introduced their group and pictures were taken for the family newsletter before adjourning.
