Norman named All-Star; played in East-West game

Benjamin Cliatt Norman, a recent graduate of Watauga High School in Boone, N.C., was named a North Carolina State Soccer All-Star and was invited to play in the East-West All-Star Soccer game held July 19 in Greensboro, N.C.

Attending the game were his parents; his Norman grandparents; his maternal grandparents; Mr. and Mrs. John D. Green, Sr. of Morganton; his brother, James Robert Norman of Boone; his uncle and aunt, Dr. and Mrs. Andy M. Norman of Blowing Rock; his sisters, Lydia Norman of Raleigh and Mrs. Jeff (Ashley) Smith of Lexington Park, Md.; cousins, Amy N. Martin of Mobile, Ala. and Heather, Hannah and Rebekah Thompson of Apopka, Fla.; a youth group from First Baptist Church of Boone and his girlfriend, Alex Lucas of Charlotte, N.C.

The game was called shortly before half-time due to serious weather conditions and play was never resumed.

The score was 0-0 but Ben had exhibited good playing and a great spirit during the first half. The AllStar coach had complimented him at water break by telling his teammates, “Get the ball to Ben Norman, he knows what to do with it.”

During Ben’s entire high school career he played soccer and excelled as an individual and helped those around him to excel as well. He was highly complimented by his coach, Doug Kidd, as being a team player as he contributed much to the success of the team. Opposing teams were unable to shut him down because he did not seek individual glory, rather he played for the team to win.

Ben set a school record with 18 assists in a season and another with 38 assists in his career. He scored 45 goals in his career and 128 points. Both of these statistics tied him for fourth all-time at Watauga High School. He was a talented forward who made sure to involve his teammates in the best interest of the team.

Norman was an All Northwest Conference member twice, and Northwest Conference Player of The Year as a senior. He was also named to the all-region team twice, the allstate team, the Charlotte Observer Team and was Piedmont Player of The Year.

During the off season for high school soccer, this one-sport athlete worked on his game by playing on classic soccer teams.

As compensation for his dedication and hard work, he received the school’s Trailblazer Award which is presented to the top male athlete who exhibits the attitude, behavior and citizenship that is representative of the Watauga Athletic Department in a positive manner. This award requires the student to be in good academic standing. This was no worry for Ben with his 4.0 average in academics.

In the fall, Ben will attend Greensboro College and play soccer in a wellestablished division III program. He received the Dean Scholarship from Greensboro College and the Kathy Lion Memorial Scholarship from First Baptist Church in Boone, N.C.

Ben is the son of Dan and Teresa Norman of Blowing Rock, N.C. and is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Toombs Norman of Lincolnton.
