Judge rules in favor of county

The Georgia Court of Appeals upheld Superior Court Judge T. Penn McWhorter's decision to grant Lincoln County's petition for declaratory judgment relief, filed against Sheriff Gerald Lawson on February 16, 2007. The unanimous ruling by the court was issued Tuesday, July 8, by A. Harris Adams, appellate judge.

Hearst receives Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Iraq

Sergeant Jerry A. Hearst of Lincolnton was recently awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action, while providing support for Operation All-American Tiger in Iraq. The medal was presented to Hearst by his brother, SFC Johnny G.

River of Life participants learn value of servanthood

For the past 18 years, teenagers or "angels" have touched lives and learned lessons in servanthood through "River of Life." The interdenominational ministry is sponsored by the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC), under the direction of Rev. Bob Beckwith.

Sheriff reports on activities for the month of June

An activity report for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office was issued recently by Sheriff Gerald Lawson. According to the sheriff, the following arrests were made last month in the county: ..Lisa Marie Bass, 30, charged with one count of felony theft by taking in connection with a jewelry theft at a residence on Tankersley Road.

Construction progressing

Work continues to progress on the new gymnasium at the Curry Colvin Recreation Complex. When the facility reaches completion in September, it will feature such amenities as a fitness center, a concession stand, and a meeting room. The project is being funded by SPLOST revenues.

Visitors pack park for fireworks

Elijah Clark State Park was filled to the brim on Saturday, July 5 for the Thunder over Thurmond fireworks. Approximately 621 vehicles entered the park with approximately 2,000 visitors for the day, along with registered campers.

Kirkland selected as Firefighter First Responder of the Year

Perry Kirkland was selected by the Chapter Companions of the Augusta Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) as Outstanding Firefighter and First Responder of the Year for Lincoln County. During his years with the Lincoln County Department of Public Safety, his knowledge of the fire service and the community is reassuring to the citizens of Lincoln County.

Some of my finest childhood memories come from climbing trees. When I was growing up in Lincolnton, we just had two TV stations to watch and video games and computers were light years away. Climbing a tall pine or sweetgum gave me something to do and it gave me a new perspective too. Life among the boughs inspired the imagination.
